Although it is not a work of art, I consider Shogun one of the best modern books I read. I learned so much. I have no way of knowing if the descriptions are in any measure accurate of the Edo period. But the traits of character and the traditional culture as depicted in the book, fit like gloves with the experiences that I have of the Japanese people such as I had the chance to encounter professionally.

Recently I have seen the movies of the great master Takeshi Kitano and found again, in different keys, the themes of Shogun. In the past the other great master, Akira Kurosawa, chanted similar songs.
