Yup, it really seems to be the ideal way of doing things. Taking into account the time not spent waiting for the reader to update the metadata, it's no doubt the fastest way too. I suppose perhaps a swap to a 2GB SD card would be a solution to my original query, but with "browse folders" there's really no problem any more.
