I was told that I could recommend books to be purchased (it's only a request, no guarantees), and I could also make a donation, but they don't seem to have any way to connect the two actions to be sure the book I want is purchased. Definitely not the response I was hoping for. I have access to another library system that has just started carrying ebooks, so I think I'll contact them - hopefully they'll be more open to the idea.
The Free Library of Philadelphia isn't my library system; they're actually at the far end of the state from me. My library system—the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh—doesn't yet support downloadable ebooks. They only do the kind that you have to read on-line at your computer -- complete with the truly disgusting "click-to-wait-to-download... the... next... p...a...g...e..." reading interface.

So I got a Philly library card specifically to get access to their Overdrive eBook collection. And I'm thrilled that the librarians there think that accepting donations from library patrons is a good idea.
