Perhaps one compromise might be that if you are editing the metadata for a single book (rather than a mass edit) then the .OPF file could be writen out to the Stanza folder as at that point any overhead would be minimal so the performance argument is not so important. I tend to go into editing individual book metadata when i first add them to my library.

I guess it could also be added as a (no-peristent) option on the mass edit screen for those (like myself) who already have a lot of books in the library and want this done and do not mind the once-off hit.
