A Midnight Clear by William Wharton sounds like a great "War" book. A good war book should (for me anyway) tell the story of people, and how war affects and effects them.
War stories don't have to be glorious. and about heroes.
No one, for instance, can deny that "
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is a truly great "War" story.
