I'm also in Australia and I have Nook that I'm very happy with, it's rather easy (for someone with a bit more than basic computer skills) to buy books from B&N and and other source and to strip DRM.

Since software update 1.3 the Nook has been a very nice reader far nicer than the Kobo, but unless you have some bit more than basic computer skills. The Kobo might be easier to get books for and less hassle.
