The problem was actually mod_php when running under the wrong MPM under Linux, which was causing Apache to crash the child socket before it was cleanly finished writing data to the client. The interesting thing is that I'm not using php at all for the Plucker website; just having it included in the server namespace causes non-php apps to take out the Apache child serving any request.

Arg!

I've fixed that issue by switching back to the (only) MPM that works under Linux with mod_php, and all is well.

As an aside, I'm literally days away from the new Plucker website launch, which I've been building for a little while. Leaner, faster, more-modular, and it will let me "snap in" the other Plucker tools I've written over the last few years (Plucker Syndication Server, Build-It, and some other tools and toys). Only a few minor pages left before that part is done...

I've also converted all of the existing CVS repository data for Plucker to Subversion (our code goes back almost 10 years!), and that change will be coming soon as well.

Lots of fun stuff coming... and don't forget to check my Plucker Projects page for other things I'm working on.
