I for one, love my Ipad for reading and having the Kindle app brought all my Amazon Kindle purchases on board. The lighting is adjustable and works fine for me. As for the "weight" of 1.4 pounds, I just rest it on a small pillow in my lap if I don't want to hold it. I love have a backlight which was a complaint about the Kindle (remember Kindle owners!). As a book reader, it is working for me!
I hated the "experimental" browser on the Kindle. I love the Safari browser on the iPad. Missing flash? not so much.
Am I "cool" because I own one? No, but I do truly enjoy sharing it with others and watching the joy and amazement on their faces when they try it out! Nothing wrong with that in my opinion. New technology is always worth sharing.
The iPad may not be "magical" but it is revolutionary in my opinion. It's the next step in portable computing and tablets, like netbooks, will become common place as more products are offered by different companies.
As for the thread on reading it in direct sunlight, just remember, direct sunlight isn't good for any computer device. I can read it on my covered porch if I want to but yes, it is best inside just like any LCD screen. Would you try to watch your LCD Tv outside in bright sunlight? Not!
