It seems that the Kobo reader only updates the battery indicator during the boot cycle. You need to actually turn it off and back on to get an accurate reading.
Unfortunately, this has led to many people incorrectly ruling the unit as defective since it was "at 100% yesterday and down to one bar today."
I hope this is something they are working to rectify.
