I love my 505, but I'm reluctant to invest any more money in the sony store, for two reasons. First, the books can't be read on my other devices, and second, the lack of selection makes me worry they will shortly abandon e-reading all together and I'll have spent a lot of money on orphaned e-books. If they came out with a sony app, like the kindle store did, I'd feel more confidence. But right now, not so much.
Actually, the eBooks from Sony are in standard ePub with standard DRM. If you were to install the txtr app on your iPod Touch, you would be able to also read the eBooks you've purchased via Sony. Buying an ePub from Sony is no different then buying an ePub from BooksOnBoard, Kobo, etc. It's just B&N that is different. But they do have an app for that.

So really, you aren't wasting your money buying from Sony. They use the standard Adobe adept DRM just like 99% of all the other sellers out there. It's just B&N & Apple who have to do things differently. And buying ePub from Apple via iBooks IS a waste of money.
