Kat that is pretty typical of e-ink readers as they refresh for the nest page. Some ereaders turn the page quicker so the negative image is not as obvious. The only way this can be avoided as far as I know is to go down the LCD path. In that case a Jetbook might be worth a look at.
Calibre will convert any non DRM'ed book. But you can get hold of excellent liberation tools to remove DRM from a purchased ebook if that is your wish.
