While I agree with your overall point, the closed nature of the Apple ecosystem relates to the OS and Apps, not the content, at least from a reading perspective. There's no dedicated ebook device that can read as much as the Apple devices, and I don't believe any of the computer/tablet devices can read more right now. The only content that I can't put on my iPhone/iPad is Sony content. That's why if I could only have one ebook device it would be the iPad.
