That is because you are unaware of certain hidden costs to owning paper books, or of certain cost-saving aspects of ebook readers.
• There are thousands of free public domain books available. If you happen to read older content / classics, you'll break even almost immediately.
• Owning books require shelves (which are rarely free) and take up a lot of space.
• With an ebook reader, you no longer have to pay delivery charges.
• You also don't have to go to a store, which some find pleasant, but others view as taking up time.
Of course, economically it still might not work for you. It sounds like you need to pick a number you are willing to pay for an ebook reader, and then wait until you find one that is available to you at that price point.
