I bought a couple of things while I stayed in the US, and all of it still works (my truck, BBQ, PC....). So no warranty issues so far.

Yup, VAT = Value Added Tax. Only European residents have to pay it. Living in Asia service is the same for me in Europe or US (not that I expect any on such a product, except for the pen which has been chewed up by our parrot -- fortunately it is still usable!). And yes, while the 3G is useless now, I am still holding out some hope that some friendly hacker finds a way to enable GSM 3G.
