I agree, the battery life is not an issue. As for the backlit reading, I think it's fine. With the Kindle app, I can turn it way down or change it to sepia for a "gentler" mode. Also if needed, there is an option to reverse to black blackground with white print. Another "plus" for the Kindle app is the ability to highlight text, type a note, and add a bookmark. Plus since it syncs with your Amazon account automatically, you can pick up where you left off in a book on your computer or iPhone with the Amazon apps/programs. Nice! I am surprised that there is no search capability but you can check your highlights and notes in current book.

Ibook app allows brightness control, font sizing, adding a bookmark, and searching current book. It also has a dictionary and you can copy text! Nice for note taking or sending a quote via email.
