The issue that I encountered was with Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer where clicking on a foot note would take me to the foot notes but clicking on "return to text" would take me back to some completely different page. I was able to use the joystick by pushing it left to go back in history rather than clicking it down which should have worked. That is a limitation of the LRF format. It doesn't support inline links. i.e. liniks to text within a paragraph. It only support block level links.
