Many American detectives are famous for making guesses at the climax that turn out wrong, and looking terribly confused, until the real culprit does something stupid to give themselves away (like the classic panicking and pulling a gun on the crowd in order to escape, resulting in the American Quick-Draw, the chase or the all-out fight to subdue the bad guy). Often, at that point, the detective finally sees the significance of the final clue ("Of course! He's the one who wears two left socks!") to cement the capture.
God, I miss those shows. They were hilarious!
