If I was buying The Lord of the Rings, I would buy the omnibus as it is cheaper enough to make it worth it.

As for the reviewer lying, it could have been due to something the reviewer was doing wrong or the reader being used having bugs. the Kobo reader has bugs in font sizing. So I just think the reviewer was wrong. He was wrong, I've had the omnibus on my 505 and it is able to change the font size no problem.
