They already have your notes and highlights; they've always backed them up for you, along with the last page read so you could sync to the furthest page read. Now, all they're doing is, when at least three people make the same highlight in a book, they anonymously state, "15 people found this passage interesting". It's just the highlights not the," Lol, funny!" note you made in your books.

Nothing spy-like about it. And if you don't like it, Amazon explains how you can opt out....

This is not a big deal. It's no different than on the book pages; "Customers who bought this were also interested in..." And nook stores one's highlights as well, they're providing a service, not data grabbing.

I think this is a nice feature and like particularly the idea of using it to show Ocr/spelling/formatting errors in books.... if enough people highlight these mistakes, it might actually make a difference in how carefully people check over their works before publishing them to the kindle store.
