Well, I went through the story AGAIN.
I eliminated the "red herrings" and went with the basic criminal clues. And there are only two, maybe three who could have committed the crime. If it is really a unique solution that can be arrived at by pure logic, I guess my logic is on holidays somewhere.

I'll sleep on it and see...
