And this is totally fine, of course. You may not be the audience for many of these sites, just like many who like Disney may not be interested in ESPN.

But the point is that the consumers should decide if they want to frequent a site or not. Right now, largely because of Apple's protectionism, we are seeing the unnecessary Balkanization of the web.

To point to Disney again, they have to create a regular site, a mobile site, and an iPad site. I do believe the iPad version is a nod to their largest shareholder, but nevertheless it serves to fragment to web.

My hope is that with the impending availability of Flash on most major mobile platforms, the need for mobile sites will lessen, and so will the fragmentation.

But the move to browser-embedded, proprietary video (H.264) is much more worrisome in the long run, as it will restrict commercial content viewing to commercial browsers only.

Apple, Microsoft and the content providers would love this, since it will potentially allow for DRM schemes built into your browser. With no open alternatives.
