Controlled conditions... No car, no travel required. Trusted friends on hand, staying sober, in case I needed some help. Used good quality ethanol, no rotgut. Had a bathtub to sleep in, if necessary.
And finally, a clear plan to drink until drunk and study the sensations along the way...
(Did I mention my undergrad degree is in molecular biology...)
