While I kinda skipped down thru the thread, I didn't catch this particular observation, which I friend had mentioned to me. I had asked him if he had purchased his iPad yet, and he observed that, while the outside temperature is a bit chillier than normal this year, he didn't think Hell had frozen over yet.
Then, he mentioned an article he had read that placed the iPad in the category of "peripheral". I find this quite accurate. You can't replace a computer with an iPad, because you NEED your computer to "sync" your stuff to the iPad.
The early observers were correct: the iPad is merely a giant iPod, and pretty much does the same stuff. Nothing wrong with that. It serves a niche, but it is NOT a computer, it is NOT a netbook and it is definitely NOT a dedicated ereader.
It is sort of like a tinkerer who can do many things well, but no one thing great.
