Friend of mine has both an iPad and Kindle. He was prepared to dislike reading on the iPad--but he has found he really likes it. He said it's a better e-reader than he imagined and he doesn't mind the backlight at all--except in bright sunlight. But for reading in bed and general--he says it definitely competes with Kindle.
