Amazing coincidence! I also came down with pneumonia after two bouts of upper respiratory disease during Basic Training. I came about as close to being recycled as someone can come without actually being recycled. After getting out of the hospital the second time for upper respiratory infection, I had to do the track qualification and couldn't make it 1/4 the way around the track. The next day I was feeling better, and for punishment, the drill sergeant made me run up and down the platoon as they ran the 7 miles to the rifle range. The following day I was in the hospital with pneumonia. I suppose the only reason I wasn't recycled was because spinal meningitis was going around Fort Jackson at the time and people were literally falling out every day. Another recycled recruit would probably have been a political embarrassment.
Did you have to take any cold water showers to reduce the fever? Weren't they fun?
