I know I saw this approach discussed, but I can't find the post and it does not seem to work. What does work, is a) strip DRM, b) convert resulting MOBI to MOBI using Calibre.

It is now possible to add mobidedrm.py as a plugin to Calibre, so (a) then becomes import AZW into Calibre (plugin automatically converts it to DRM-free MOBI).

A downside of this approach is that Calibre's MOBI to MOBI conversion can significantly change the ebooks formating.
