from me? personal observation. I've noticed that almost all animals react to poorly tanned leather. these (if you have encountered them) have a really unique smell. I tend to associate the smell with one town in Mexico where I know a lot of tanning was done, and you can get any leather item for a song, but they stunk to high heaven!!! occasionally you encounter the smell in the states on fairly cheap leather goods.
