So it sounds like if you want to transfer pictures from your camera to an external hard drive, you have to first import them into an app on the iPad, disconnect and use an external hard drive that has its own power source?

I have a WD Passport and on some notebooks, I have to use a special Y cable with two USB connectors for twice the power.
