I put most of my books for my Pocket Pro on a 4 Gig SanDisk Ultra SDHC card and while I'm not backpacking across the tundra, out-of-range of easy charging opportunities, I am not noticing any loss-of-charge issues. (I 'monkey about' with the PP plugged into the USB port frequently - moving books, tweaking CSS settings, etc. such that I'm probably getting "topped off" charge-wise.)
I do the same thing with my PRS-600 (also a 4 Gig SanDisk Ultra), which is more the energy-hog, and I simply make a point of throwing it onto the PSP charger for a couple hours whenever I know I'll be using the reader for an extended period time. So far, it works for me.
I appreciate that SD cards consume more power than running everything off the internal memory, but in my case, I haven't noticed any problems for my devices. I respect other's choices for relying more on the internal memory for power (and other reasons). I simply choose a different approach.
Cheers!
