Yes, that is one of my main annoyances with my Kindle DX. The screen looks amazing, but you have to put it under the right lighting to read. The lighting in my room sucks so I usually have to sit in a weird place or place the DX at a weird angle to get the right lighting.

I haven't noticed any headaches from either my DX or iPad. I think as a strictly book reading device my DX still has the edge over my iPad (the epaper screen is just beautiful), but the additional features of the iPad (choose your own reader app, color, easy zoom, better organization, larger storage, backlit so I don't need perfect light settings, and of course it's more than just a reading device) has made me switch to using my iPad more than the DX. I'm still undecided if I will sell of my DX since it has so many great qualities... I'll have to get more reading in on the iPad to see if it can completely replace the DX.
