I'm not at all knowledgeable about USB protocols. but I wonder if there is any way for the Kobo to detect that the device HAS been stopped, and to perform the updating while still plugged in?

It strikes me that the battery life is quoted in Page Turns; yet the act of adding material through any means (especially complex books) can take quite an extended period of time.
