That's not actually true, Steve. See
here for a useful table of the specific gravity of all sorts of liquids. Petrol (gasoline) has a specific gravity of about 0.73 (water = 1.0). This is obvious, if you stop and think about it; petrol consists of the lighter fractions of crude oil, and crude oil itself (specific gravity about 0.8-0.9, depending where it's from) floats on water, as is currently being practically illustrated around parts of the US coastline.
