That could be part of it, but not all of it. My girlfriend's Dlink router is pretty old, pretty sure it isn't G, much less N. Pretty sure it's still a B.

Mine's a Linksys and is B/G and set to mixed mode. Drops on hers all the time, never has dropped when using it at my place.

To be fair, that router of hers just sucks as I get drops on my laptop over there too. Part of it may be she's in a high rise condo so their are more networks in range than in my garden style place--through I still pick up 8-10 at my place on my laptop. The ipad only picks up 2-3, so part of it is the wireless reception on the iPad is a little weak.
