False.
Kindle connects to PC via USB and appears as a standard disk drive under Windows and Mac.
All you do is drag-and-drop files onto the appropriate Folders and you're good to go.
Unlike other brands that will go unmentioned you do NOT need any special software.
The only time Amazon charges you to put files on your Kindle is if you email them via their Whispernet wireless connection instead of using USB. And its a straight bandwidth charge. Nothing nefarious.
