I am in a similar situation with one of my work laptops and when I am taking that one anywhere then I would tend to avoid taking any intermediate device, I can play media files on that one and then have my ebook reader for books since it takes up so little space.

It's so hard picking the perfect devices with so many constraints, isn't it!?
Luckily for me I have managed to get a second laptop out of my work and it is a much smaller x200s thinkpad (sadly not the tablet model ) and I am finding that gives me pretty much all the benefits of a netbook with the only real compromise on the larger laptop is the gfx card and I just don't play pc games nowadays anyway.
