Mark Twain (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910) may have uttered it before Groucho Marx (October 2, 1890 – August 19, 1977) but maybe Groucho delivered it more memorable? How's that for a compromise - at least until WDE get's a photo of the inscription.
Maybe they both uttered it paraphrasing one or the other - after all, Groucho was 19 when Twain died.. they may have said it at the same time!
