The display of the clock can be toggled if you're in the about screen. I have this hack for the 600 and it makes no difference for me in terms of battery.
You have the option of Off/Update (on page turns)/Update (when the minute changes).
You don't want the last one as this draws more battery. But the update on page turns is great.
You'll also get screenshot capability.
