David Weber's Safehold series
I'm about 140 pages into the third book, and I've just realized that this series is an homage to Russian literature: people sit and talk for 700+ pages and then someone dies.

Okay, I'll admit that I'm not being fair to Russian lit, but this book really is that bad. I'm 140 pages in and nothing has happened yet. I think this could be the first Weber novel that I've ever abandoned.

P.S. The first sentence of this post is a joke. It's a reference to a line from Crusade, one of Weber's early novels.
