I think I started with cloth books, which have the virtue of surviving being chewed :-)

The first books I remember reading on my own were Noddy books - I had quite a collection. I moved onto the Famous Five, and one wondrous day our town's librarian gave me a whole box of Bobbsey Twins books that were destined for the tip.

My parents always gave me books for birthday and Christmas presents. And one of my dearest childhood memories is of walking to the library every Friday night with my father, each of us collecting a pile of books. The library had a rule that children were only allowed to borrow two books at a time, but the librarian (see above) waived it in my case.
