You are correct. A USB port must have a by design limiter at 500mA.
Repeatedly draw 500 Ma from that 1000mAHr Li-ion battery in the PEz and you will probably damage it in the short run.
Maximum recommended charge is on the order of C/10, even if you were reading a book, the page turns probably draw less than 100mA
momentarily, that still leaves 400mA (
which is 300mA over recommended rate) for charging if the USB port is up to spec.
Reading should only slow down the charge, not stops it.
