Generally, I have had better luck with the Silk Pagoda DVD using it's HTML interface.

1) Open "readme.htm" from the DVD's top level directory.
2) Pick out your book, or use the search mechanism.
3) Click the link for the book, and choose "Save to disk" to copy it into a "new books directory".
4) Open CONNECT and import the "new books directory".

This isn't related to this USB driver issue, but it completely avoids opening a directory with 10,000 files in it. I've had more than a couple of Windows Explorer bombs opening the storage directories on the DVD.

I've also had CONNECT stall a couple of times with the "Open using CONNECT" alternative. I think that's also related to passing in a path name of a file in a directory with 10,000 items, but I'm not sure. You certainly can't open the DVD using the left hand sources menu in CONNECT, that folder never opens.
