No, it isn't.
We used to have the same situation as you in the UK, but the book market "opened up" here about 10 years ago. Since then, a lot of small independent booksellers have gone out of business, and the big retail chains now dominate. On the other hand, many shops now sell popular books at half price or less, and books are sold in supermarkets, which certainly didn't used to be the case.
