I have something similar with my business that I have to fill two declarations of taxes every 3 months. One federal(Canada) and one provincial(Québec).
They declare what I've sold and the taxes I've collected for those sales minus the taxes I've paid for brute material purchases and office supplies and investment.

Yes, that's pretty much it, but I do it once a year. Every quarter I have to pay an advance based on an estimation.
The thing is, for almost all of my contracts I go through a broker in the U.K., so I bill them and they bill my client. Since they are in the U.K., I don't collect VAT on my sales, but I do recover some on my purchases. So the tax office ends up owing me money. Last year the amount they owed me was too low to get a refund, but this year I should be able to get one, if I understood this correctly.
