I didn't read the complete thread, but the 600 handles pdfs ok if you use the pan and zoom function. Reflowing will mess up pages having charts, formulas and such. The pan and zoom function will retain the page layout but will handle the page more like an image where you zoom in and then move around the image to get into view whatever you want to see on the page.
I used the 505 before, and extracting pdf pages to images worked pretty good. Allthough you cannot move around the image freely when zoomed in. You can think of it the following way: You zoom in and now the image gets divided into a 3x3 grid. So moving the window you're watching will "jump" you from A1 to A2 or to B1 (if you think of the grid like an excel sheet from A1 to C3). So if a formula is somewhere on A1 and A2, you cannot see the whole formula as you jump from cell to cell. The 600 can move around freely so that you can setup your zoom level and section to accomodate the screen.
It's probably not the very best to read letter sized pdfs, but it's a workaround and you still have the better portability of the device and the lower price compared to the bigger readers. I would have preferred the larger readers, too, But I wasn't willing to jump the fence on such a high price.
