What I find encouraging (aside from the pricing) is that the hardware design is on the right track for a paperback-replacement ebook reader. If only they'd realize that they don't really need to support all formats under the sun, just *one* done right...
As is, if I knew it did pdf properly (and I D-E-S-P-I-S-E pdf as an "ebook format") I'd get it just for the screen and ergonomics. It wouldn't be hard to convert the BAEN HTML editions into readable PDFs. Or JPG folders for that matter. Annoying but not hard. And that price point does make up for a bit of annoyance.
Who knows, maybe the hackers will pick it up and start tinkering.
One can only dream of what OpenInkpot or Pocketbook Software would make of this thing.
Give it time: ereader nirvana (5" WVGA color for $99) is near. :-)
