We're talking about an area of the world that has been at war with itself for over eight thousand years--that we have records for. Land resources are limited and a lot of the terrain is harsh, leading to a lot of strict rules to allow communities to survive at all. Technology has overcome a lot of the limitations, but the thousands of years of historical background of conflict remain.
And if the Western world would GTFO, they'd cope. They managed to live alongside each other without total destruction for a very long time. The problem isn't whether the Israelis and Palestinians can find some way to live near each other nor whether Iran and Iraq have religious differences that make them kill each other, it's that people who live ~6,000 miles away have demanded *their* right to have a say in the conflicts, based on religious & moral structures not shared by the people involved.
(Okay, rant over. Can we go back to the promiscuous women causing earthquakes? 'Cos I'm in favor of that.)
