It's backlit. TFT has nothing to do with the presence or absence of a backlight. TFT displays do not even need to be LCD, though almost all high-resolution LCDs are TFT nowadays.

TFT LCDs come in 2 general flavors: transmissive and reflective (and transflective if you like betweeners). The one in this device is transmissive. The jetBook's is reflective.
