I believe a fuller quote is, “History is more or less bunk. It’s tradition. We don’t want tradition. We want to live in the present, and the only history that is worth a tinker’s damn is the history we make today.” -1916.

The comments on how he saw things, in his time and the value of a man's efforts,
to improve life, in a practical manner, being of more importance than an Ivy League
Education. Or the Classical Liberal Education of his day.
