If they're being used to kill each other I don't think they count as pets.

I favor cats, because they are beautiful and relatively self-sufficient. But dogs would have been a close runner up because they are more demonstrative and you can take them for walks and get exercise that way.

A dog is supposedly a better exercise buddy than a person--a person may try to talk you out of exercising but a dog always wants a walk.
