Sounds more likely to me. I think kids in France used to do that, when there were still scarabs around. Never heard anything about jewels though.
A long time ago, I saw a documentary where these people living on the shores of Lake Victoria caught a kind of gnat to eat it. At some time during the year the gnat eggs all hatch on the lake's surface, and you see great gnat clouds. These people just swing baskets in the air to catch the gnats, and then make a kind of paste of them. It's a delicacy. That's what I remember from that documentary anyway, but I may have some details wrong, it's not a recent memory.
